I heard about this a few days ago and I indent to try this game out. I wanted to get it when it first came out but was too costly for me, now F2P like STO will bring me in.

They have released a free trial of Star Wars: The Old Republic. It seems from what I have read that, you can register on the website and then download the client. It will allow you to play up to level 15 without any time limit. I plan to download it tonight and give it a go. If I do enjoy it, I may buy it for the free 30 membership then let that expire and then wait til the full free to play is launched.

I have indeed downloaded the game and am now able to play. The download process is different from others I have done. You download the installer just like all the others. The difference come when you run the installer. Other games downloads the assets with the installer. SW:TOR has the root file in already with the installer so the "installation" is very quick. Once the installation is complete, you can start the launcher. When you log on and patch up, that is where the bulk of the assets are downloaded.

So far, the game mechanics are very easy to learn. If you currently play STO, the movements will feel very familiar. I have created a Sith Warrior to learn the game. I have no intentions of keeping this character though. I am hoping that some of you will join in and we can group up. Grow within the game together.

Hope to see some of you on.

I can tell you one thing about this game, it's terrible. Just trying to play the game I am constantly unable to defeat enemies, a new boss every 5 minutes. While I understand it is aimed for teams, it's obviously not catering for the single player who doesn't have the luxilary of a team of players.

Also the controls are awkward, graphics pretty poor and the camera controls are pretty substandard. Took me like close to 20 Gig of downloading to get the game updates and was really a major disappointment.

I never thought I would find a game worse than STO, but I guess I have found it.

I never thought I would find a game worse than STO, but I guess I have found it.

I have a machine that by today's standards, is pretty much lower mid- end. Good but, not great. I figured the graphics I was viewing was due to my machine's limitations. I did have to adjust the graphics as it was set to low by default. Once I did that it was better. 20 gigs is a lot but I believe most of that is due to ALL mission givers are cinimatic with voice-overs. As for the controls, I personally found them easier. If you use the first person controls on STO, I can see how it would be troubling to learn. I never could get a hang of that feature so the transition was not bad for me. Took me a little while to pick up on how the combat works. Once I did, the game did get a little easier. From what I have experienced, the main story of it can be done solo. Some of the side quests you can do does encourage grouping. I have had to group a couple of times to complete missions. As for the enemies, that has gotten a couple of times. I killed a group of enemies and had to step away for a moment. Came back and Inwas dead. Now I dont leave til I am in a known safe zone.

Here are some ofthe things I like about it.
1) Open world environment. There are not any mission gates as there are in STO. You can go to any place at any time (provided your class has authorization).

2) Each class on each faction has its own unique progression story. Also, when you reach level 10, you can pick a sub class. The sub class determins what role your chacter will play. The variety is amazing.

3) I like that you can choose the direction your dialog can take. The choices you make has a real impact on how the story plays out. The choices you make can give you light or dark side points on your force meter. They can also give or take affection points with your companions.

4) Playstyle servers. They have servers designed for different playstyles. They are as follows:
PvE: players (such as myself) that focus on the standard story missions. PvP can only be done via the PvP queue or to challange another play that must be accepted.
PvP: players that like to play against other players. These servers puts you in an open PvP world where you can attack or be attacked at any time.
RP-PvP and RP-PvE: same as above but designed for those that like to role play as their characters.

A few things I don't like.
1) Customization is EXTREMELY limited. The creation tools are not very good at all. Where on STO you can fully customize the look of your character, on TOR you pretty much select from a bunch of predefined looks. Your wardrobe changes with what you equip. You do have the ability to color match your items but that is the best you can do as far as costumes go.

2) Though Inhave not gotten to any yet, i have read the space combate is very limiting. In STO, you are stuck in a box but, you get near 100% freedom of movement (flying "up side down" would be cool). In TOR, you follow a predefined path.

Overall, I find STO to be the superior product, even with all of its flaws. STO is my first MMO and TOR is my fourth. The other two are Champions Online and LOTRO. TOR is, at this point, my second favorite and a will grant me a nice break from STO when I need it.

I must admit those are good features, I really like the dialogue option choices as well. Give replay potential that STO doesn't have.

Yeah the customization I too find a real disappointment.

Just to let any of you who may be wanting to check out the game, a little info on my character.

Name: Rogonath
Class: Sith Warrior
Sub-Class: Juggernaut (Tanking)
Species: Cyborg
Level: 11
(Image not available due to lack of screenshot capability with the game)
Server: Harbinger (North America, West Coast, PvE)

Rogonath is currently serving as apprentice to Darth Baras. He currently has one companion, a Twilek female, named Vette. I will not disclose too much info regarding the story line as to not spoil it for those who want to play and experience it for yourself.

Maj, Kat, and I will be starting a Republic team on a server soon. Any who want to join us are free to do so. We will determine when this will take place and meet on TeamSpeak prior to starting as to pick a server to play on. If you are not play STO, pm me and I will send you the TeamSpeak server info. Team grouping in TOR seems to be limited to 4 players.

Hello all. I have been really enjoying The Old Republic. I finally have an image of all of my characters. I had to download and use Fraps to get the images though. Anyways, here are my characters.

Jinocin.jpg

Jinocin, a pure blood Sith, serves as an assassin and apprentice to Lord Zesh. He was forced into the Sith Academy after a life of slavery. Jinocin rose above his competitors in the Academy and won over the favor of Lord Zesh. Because he had to prove himself to be more then a slave, he shows an arrogant demeanor. Not much for diplomacy, he prefers to settle disputes with his double-bladed lightsaber.

Rogoath.jpg

Rogonath, a Cyborg, serves as the muscle of his master Darth Baras. Rogonath believes in some sense of justice. Even though he is a Sith and agent to the Empire, he does not believe that violence is always the best option. He will use intimidation as a means to the end but, he is not afraid to spill blood if needed.

Parrik.jpg

Parrick is a Bounty Hunter that consider himself among the galaxy's best. Vying for a spot in The Great Hunt on Drommand Kaas is only the beginning to making his name known. Even though he often finds himself employed by Imperial Denizens, he does not think of himself as an Imperialist. The highest bidder will earn his services. If his target shows a willingness to pay more than his contractor, they just may live to see another day.

Oran-Dane.jpg

Oran-Dane has learned the Jedi way under the tutelage of Jedi Master Yuon Par. He is the embodiment of the Jedi way of life. Wise beyond his years, he has advanced through his training at an impressive pace. He will encourage others to find the inner strength needed to defend themselves. He will always try to find the peaceful solution to any conflict but, failing that, his knowledge of the Force and skill with the lightsaber will allow him to complete his mission.

Pretty cool mate, I haven't played the game in weeks but considering in that time my PC has gotten worse I very much doubt it could handle any games atm as it is now struggling with photoshop and MS3D. Dying ram, looking at seeing if I can get some new Ram next week. I hope it's the ram and not the processor.

Anyway here are pics from my two characters.

The first is a Sith Warrior, the second a Republic Trooper.

No problem my friend.

Level 15 is correct. It is called a Free Trial account. Anyone playing under the free trial account will automaticly transition to a free to play account when it goes live. The free to play account has character restrictions that the Free Trial account does not. One of these is character race. I do not know what will happen to any character races you may have that will be restricted on the F2P model. My favorite character that I have is one of the restricted races and I hate to think that I may not be able to continue his legacy.

I love TOR!

I wish they had a better space experience but it is more about the ground action anyway.

I'm on the following servers:
- Jedi Convanent, US
- The Shadowlands, US
- The Progenitor, EU

Please if you have your toons on the same either Rep or Imp please do let me know and we can group. Happy to help you out if you are not yet at the 55 level cap.

Though I am focusing on getting my Progenitor Trooper up to 55 then the others on the same server. I do have 2 toons above 50 on Shadowlands (Imp only) and Covenant (Rep only).

Anyway PM me for my toon names and hope to team up with you soon if you are on those servers above.

I haven't played TOR for ages, something Kat and I might get back into at some point. If/when we do I'll be sure to PM you. I can't even remember by username etc or what servers my characters were on. I only had two 1 Sith and 1 Republic trooper.

I have been playing The Old Republic again a lot lately. I have been playing mostly on The Harbinger. I have 4 characters on that one (Smuggler, 2 Jedi Counselors (Sage and soon to be Shadow), and a new Commando). I have been using it as my "main" server due to unlocking the Sith Trueblood for the Legacy. I am by no means bound to that server though. I have two characters on The Shadowlands (Commando and Agent) and two on Jedi Covenant (Bounty Hunter and Sith). I am a free player so I will not be able to get to 55 but, I would be happy to play with some friends. It has been lonely. Perhaps we could all set up a day each week to play together and start an adventure together.

I would love that SSF. Please do PM me your character's names and I'll friend them when I log in next.

Maj, please do find out, the game is addictive like STO as I am sure you know. lol
Love to help you out if you are a low level. Maybe even make a Guild for those on MSFC. For both Imp and Rep.

If you like, we can get on The Shadowlands together and you could use your Guardian with my Commando. They are mostly the same level. Or I could start a new consular shadow. I am about to get on now. drop me a line if you get on.
