A bit tardy on this thread here. Let's discuss the 9th film in the Star Wars saga.

First, I am not too keen on the sub-title but I'll still watch it. Hopefully this film can salvage the franchise from Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi.

Fist the teaser trailer:

Now the first official trailer:

Feel free to speculate and discuss.

Not a fan of Disney Wars. Save for Rogue One, and to a much lesser degree Solo, I don't really acknowledge anything else done by Darth Mouse.

For me, the saga ended perfectly (okay, flawed but as perfect as could be) with Return of the Jedi, nothing more to tell after that.

To those that are fans however, hope you enjoy it!

I'll watch because of my inner movie critic and because i like movies... With that said, i really despise Disney trilogy. Jar Jar Abrams made that much money purely on the basis of nostalgia of ans. TFA is a JJs way of doing things- unoriginal homages to the original trilogy, he didn't even try to make something new, we still have TIE fighters and X wings and planet-like Death star(Starkiller base). Oh, yea, we also have this immensely talented child in a desert... TLJ is a terrible, somewhat better movie than TFA but it's like it doesn't have any continuity after TFA except killing original trilogy characters. I don't expect much form the TROS, but i am curious how much more can they mess up things, or is it even possible to make a solid movie after TLJ debacle :)

Darth Mouse... that is awesome! I am going to steal that with permission :)
I guess I never got into the new SW, especially the first one. Never quite figured out why they need another rebel alliance (resistance) when the New Galactic Republic is alive and well... and I really don't want to talk about that Hyperspace gun thingie....

the real sad part, I will still watch this new movie :)

Aye, franchise salvaging seems to be the norm these days. Ep IX looks to be a "greatest hits" album repackaged as a new thing. We shall see.

3 movies in and I am still wondering: what is this main story here? Great special effects is all I see.

Basically all I get is, Return of the Jedi ended nothing, we are still doing the same thing the OT was doing 30 years ago because we can't come up with something better. We even have to legitimize NuSW by having Billy Dee wear the same outfit Glover wore in Solo and we need to resurrect the Emperor cause we just don't know what else to do at this point and there has been no clear plan as to what story we want to tell. And are they really riding space horses like they are Rohirrim charging the fields of Pelennor?

This trailer is a simple attempt at nostalgia grab, there is no narrative arc to speak of, just like the past two films. It does nothing to add or expand on the mythology or world, it simply is recreating the Original Trilogy with new faces and passing it off as something new. These new characters have nothing of the vibrancy, development or even the chemistry the originals had; I mean my God, they make Christensen's Anakin look like Walter White in terms of layering and depth. I remember when I thought Jar Jar was the worst SW could get, wow how I was proved wrong.

Look, I'm old school. I believe all I need is one Trailer, because after the last three I really don't want to see the Darkside Rey Dream, or battling on shards of something that the last time I saw was pretty much vaporized in a big Plasma filled explosion that somehow didn't damage the planet, or moon, or whatever. This looks so noninteresting that adding alien horseback riding on a cruiser was actually IN THIS THING!

Listen, if I call someone to fix something, and it comes out as messed up like the past two films, I would have had my refund after the first and never rehire the twerp again. But hey, I'm not a moviegoer so what do I know. I'll see if a copy floats my way because I would be a fool to go to the movies for this crap.

The thing is that Star war was never all that original to start with... hear me out

{ Puts on his flame retarding gear}

Star Wars features elements such as knighthood, chivalry, and Jungian archetypes such as 'the shadow'. There are also many references to Christianity, such as in the appearance of Darth Maul, whose design draws heavily from traditional depictions of the devil. Anakin was conceived of a virgin birth, and is assumed to be the "Chosen One", a messianic individual. However, unlike Jesus, Anakin falls from grace, remaining evil as Darth Vader until Return of the Jedi. According to Adam Driver, sequel trilogy villain Kylo Ren, who idolizes Vader, believes he is "doing what he thinks is right". George Lucas has said that the theme of the saga is redemption.

The saga draws heavily from the hero's journey, an archetypical template developed by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell. Each character—primarily Anakin, Luke, and Rey—follows the steps of the cycle or undergoes its reversal, becoming the villain. A defining step of the journey is "Atonement with the Father".Obi-Wan's loss of a father figure could have impacted his relationship with Anakin, whom both Obi-Wan and Palpatine are fatherlike mentors to. Luke's discovery that Vader is his father has strong repercussions on the saga and is regarded as one of the most influential plot twists in cinema. Supreme Leader Snoke encourages Kylo Ren to kill his father, Han Solo. Kylo uses the fact that Rey is an orphan to tempt her into joining the dark side. According to Inverse, the final scene in The Last Jedi, which depicts servant children playing with a toy of Luke and one boy using the Force, symbolizes that "the Force can be found in people with humble beginnings."

Historical influences

Political science has been an important element of Star Wars since the franchise launched in 1977, focusing on a struggle between democracy and dictatorship. Darth Vader's design, initially inspired by Samurai armor, also incorporated a German military helmet. Originally, Lucas conceived of the Sith as a group that served the Emperor in the same way that the Schutzstaffel served Adolf Hitler; this was condensed into one character in the form of Darth Vader.Stormtroopers borrow the name of Nazi "shock" troopers. Imperial officers wear uniforms resembling those of German forces during World War II, and political and security officers resemble the black-clad SS down to the stylized silver death's head on their caps. World War II terms were used for names in the films; e.g. the planets Kessel (a term that refers to a group of encircled forces) and Hoth (after a German general who served on the snow-laden Eastern Front). Shots of the commanders looking through AT-AT walker view screens in The Empire Strikes Back resemble tank interiors, and space battles in the original film were based on World War I and World War II dogfights.

Palpatine being a chancellor before becoming the Emperor in the prequel trilogy alludes to Hitler's role before appointing himself Führer.Lucas has also drawn parallels to historical dictators such as Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and politicians like Richard Nixon.

The Great Jedi Purge mirrors the events of the Night of the Long Knives. The corruption of the Galactic Republic is modeled after the fall of the democratic Roman Republic and the formation of an empire.

------

Yep nothing new or original just a rehash of old story archetypes and history . I think we all have place it on to high of a pedestal due mostly to nostalgia ... We should just take it for what it is enjoy it for what it is .. just do not expect it to be original

For me, Star Wars movies ended with the Return of the Jedi and the story continued in books. The Mouse-movies have so little artistic value that it's a sacrilege to call them Star Wars.

I watched The Rise of Skywalker today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some suspicions I had were confirmed and some were not. Movie was definately better than The Last Jedi. I think Disney should have hired one director for all three movies so there could have been a coherent story told.

Yeah, I'm not breaking my streak, I probably wait for a Bottleg copy.

Yeah, that's sarcasm, but I'm in no rush to the theater, I'll catch it when I catch it.

I have watched this "Film" ... and I feel like someone as poured salt to a fresh and deep gut wound ... The Force is not with this thing the house of mouse has labeled Star wars in the lest .

I take some solace in that The Mandalorian is at least true to Star war so far ...

but

Saw Episode IX yesterday. Even with all the issues The Last Jedi had, I honestly prefer it to The Rise of Skywalker. The movie just reinforced my already poor opinion of JJ Abrams' writing ability.

Just another copy/paste job from the House of Mouse. I think that the best way to describe these three films has been as irrelevant; ruined the arcs for existing characters while introducing cardboard imitations of the original mains that were nothing beyond superficial and uninteresting at best, and completely uprooted and dismantled the original 6 movies' narrative.

On the positive side, John Williams continues to make masterful music and the special effects were lovely as ever. That is all I got for this "Sequel Trilogy".

To those of you that enjoyed them however, I'm glad that you could find in these movies what I could not.

Saw the movie as well. It was ok. Not the best, not the worst. Some silliness, some things tidied up to perfectly, but about what I expect from these last 3 movies. I'm just left wanting more of what made the originals great.

I saw the movie today and rather enjoyed it. I feel it was the best of the sequel trilogy. Wasn't a massive blockbuster but I cam away from the movie with some positive feelings something I lacked with Episode 8.
I really want to see some more of Rey, Flin and Poe and even Carrie Fishers daughter I'd like to see become a major character in future movies.

Terrible movie, disgusting Star Wars experience for me, but then, everything went FUBAR with TFA and TLJ. I hate this so called "Skywalker trilogy"that has all Skywalkers and Solos dead and Palpatine taking their name. And i won't even start about that mistery box narration overuse(abuse)... WTF...

And I'm at the opposite end. I felt that 9 was the worst and 8 was the best.

I remember being at a Writer's Guild event featuring Orci & Kurtzmann just before ST09; coincidentally, Kathleen Kennedy was also there, so this was probably when they got JJ onboard for Star Wars.

Man, even though people were giving them the benefit of the doubt at the time, I could sense impending doom loll...

At least with Star Wars, The Mandalorian was fantastic, and they have all this great material to build on from the Clone Wars.
