Place your bets now!
I think it got ugly a while back when CBS issued the new fan film rules (some of which I don't see can hold up in law) - essentially killing further development.

I think both sides are in the wrong here. I think that CBS didn't originally give two hoots about Axanar, not even about the amount of money they gained off of kickstarters, I think the only reason they care is because it's set in a similar time period to Discovery and they saw that they would be compared to Axanar (possibly not favourably given the little that have been in press releases).

I think Axanar are in the wrong because they went far beyond kickstarter rules and started selling things under the Star Trek brand (which is probably the only other thing CBS care about) and were talking about using Ares studios for profit making.

I do think both sides are being incredibly hard headed about this. Axanar shouldn't have counter sued back when CBS started to back off, and CBS shouldn't be so heavy handed with the fans who are, after all, their source of income. CBS should have had a quiet word with them, shown up with the men with suits, and offered to buy them out or let them continue with restrictions.

Frankly, when CBS saw that the fans wanted Axanar, and that the team was arguably doing better than they were, they should have bought them out, had them keep working on it, and funded Axanar as an official Star Trek project with minimal interference. Basically, Valve's approach to modders, but with film.

They could have done that, but I don't know if it would have been a good idea associating with Peters. The more I learn about the guy, the less I care for him. He seemed to have alienated many of the actors who starred in the rather impressive Prelude to Axanar; I think most if not all have jumped ship from the project since then. More over his legal shenanigans grow more silly. I think I've lost any sympathy for him.

Sad, but expected. Looks like the Ares won't be kicking anytime soon. :(

I am glad to see the lawsuit got settled. I am sure they will come up with something that will still be good to see. I am looking forward to the end results.

I'll confess that I'm somewhat surprised.
I still think the rules are a little silly, and I'm not sure that the rules about hiring ex-Trek actors can even be legal unless it was specifically written into their contract. But anyway, lets hope they can make something of it.

Ditto on the legality and sanity of the guidelines. Foolish and legally precarious. I'm hoping CBS will yet end up with some egg on their face from that.

Seriously, copyrighting Vulcan ears? I can't think of a single fantasy setting that doesn't have something with elf ears. There's no way that's enforceable.

I realize the Axanar project is separate from CBS and everything before, but I fail to see why CBS doesn't just lend some money/support and reap some of the rewards? They can still say it's not cannon and has nothing to do with any Star Trek that's come before and is just a fan project. Why not work together if even a tiny bit behind the scenes?

Why can't they turn it into a one shot movie on the grounds they reep the profits. I am sure the Axanar producers would jump at that if CBS also covers all the court costs. Unlikely to happen though.

Looks like they're going to turn the originally planned movie into two more episodes in the style of Prelude.

Last I knew, they're still limited to the settlement/the fan film guidelines, but this is still great news.

Yeah, they address that issue in the news itself.

Any Axanar is better than no Axanar. I wish I could have all of the films together in a DVD.

It would have been so great to have seen that full movie though.

Zombie thread! Kill it with Fire!!! :hot:

Regardless of your position on the Axanar team, part 2 has been released, called Interlude.

My opinion, it doesn't look as professional as the original, and the acting is lacking. However, it does show off the D7 in all its glory.

Hello:
I agree with the comments, interestingly enough it has some of the same plots mentioned in a comic on DeviantArt, so I suppose several people knew the continuation before hand.

But I was very glad to watch it!

This one isn't strictly a continuation of Axanar. It takes place in the same universe and uses their sets, but was written and directed/produced by Jonathan Lane. Great guy. This is meant to be a bridge between the previously released Prelude - picking up immediately after it left off with the D7 attack - and the upcoming Parts IV and V.

Those are almost completely finished, excepting a final day of filming that's meant to be done in LA. Covid has delayed that severely.

I cannot tell you how loud my laughter was when I saw the drop in production quality overall. MAN what a dip lol.

Also I will continue to be forever annoyed at fan films that seem to choose the wrong sounds to use for weapons fire on purpose. It is not that hard guys.

After everything that's happened with them, and seeing what we're being left with now? Not really all that enthused about seeing this end.

Again, making the point that this wasn't produced by Ares Studios. It was made by a separate group that did their own, much smaller crowdfunding campaign, and filmed at their facilities. It is, essentially, a fanfilm of a fanfilm.

Of course with the restrictions imposed on them and all of the troubles they went through, it is a miracle this managed to be released in any kind of state at all.

I know that this isn't from the main Axanar team and doesn't have the budget that they are working with, overall though I think it turned it out pretty well. It still looked better than most fan films out there.

But perhaps the best thing I could say is that this was at least ten times better than STD and Picard and all of the garbage being put out by Paramount+ or whatever the heck they are called now.

Still looking forward to seeing what the Axanar team delivers at the end of the day.

I rally enjoyed it but unfortunately it was too short thanks to the restrictions placed upon them. A real shame this wasn't picked up as an official series.
