Roberto Orci: Star Trek Sequel Script Draft Done By Christmas + Talks Theme | TrekMovie.com

Roberto Orci, who is writing the Star Trek sequel with Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, gave an update on the project in a new interview. The script should be done at the end of the year. Orci also talks about fan feedback, Abrams directing decision, and the possible darker theme. Details below.

Bob Orci’s Star Trek update

Bob Orci talked to IGN at the CBS upfronts in May where he was promoting Hawaii Five-O. IGN got him to talk about his other projects, Cowboys and Aliens and Star Trek. Here are some quick highlights on the Star Trek sequel:

* Team plans to turn in "a pretty good draft" of sequel script by Christmas
* Just like with first film, producer JJ Abrams wont decide if he will also direct sequel "until he reads the script and gets super excited" [Super 8 schedule does not appear to conflict]
* Writers not planning on including Nimoy (unless he asks to be involved)
* Orci brings "cool suggestion" fan feedback into meetings, saying fans "are consultants on the movie"

But the most interesting bit of the article was the question about the theme:

IGN: Second movies, including Wrath of Khan, are often the dark chapter. Things often get pretty intense. Are you going to go in that direction?
Orci: Well, it’s weird. We got kind of a mixed review in terms of the darkness or not in the first one. There was genocide of an entire planet, Spock’s freaking mother died, Kirk’s dad died… But it’s like, "Well, it wasn’t very dark!"
So I think maybe thematically, because we don’t have the burden of an origin story, we can play a little bit more with the theme and it can be a little bit more complicated. But I still think we like fun. Star Trek has always been funny. Even Wrath of Khan has got some great great, great fun in it. I think it will be equally confusing for some, but I do think we get to jump right into it now.

For more from Bob on Star Trek and Cowboys & Aliens, read the full interview at ign.com.

I hope it's a good movie like the first, I personally think that if it's a similar tone to Star Trek 11 they'll have a winner.

I recommend you vote in the poll and have your pay.

Kind of hard for the first film to have "dark" in it with so many LENS FLARES.

I seriously hope they don't re-make Wrath of Khan. More like they plan on re-making ST:V by the sounds of it. That movie was also intended to have a lighter, "fun" feel. Oh, and God. Who needs a starship. Bleh.

I hope they don't do Wraith of Khan or copy any previous movies episodes and keep the originality going. Introduce old favourites in a new way.

Some more news on the movie due to start filming in a few months.

Reported on Screenrant:

A source close to the production has told us that while execs at Paramount have not yet seen the script for Star Trek 2, they are already willing to spend money on pre-production offices for the sequel to the highly successful first film.

A few days ago TrekMovie reported a comment made by Simon Pegg (who played Scotty in the first film) on Twitter:

“I was making a comment about the industry yesterday not Star Trek. Word on the bridge is the new script is AMAZEBALLS and I cannot wait!!!!!â€

Perhaps Pegg heard the reaction to the story pitch made to the studio.

While the studio has not yet read the script (which isn’t quite finished yet, but is oh-so-very-close to being done), they have been pitched the entire proposed story for Star Trek 2 and the word is that yes, they really liked it. Understandably, they really want this movie to be made – the first one managed to do what almost no one thought was possible: To revive the 40+ year old Star Trek franchise. With an estimated production budget of around $150 million, the film grossed over $385 million worldwide. It was a hit not only with general audiences but with critics as well.

Actually (and surprisingly for this type of film) over at RottenTomatoes.com 94% of critics gave it a positive review (average score 8.1/10) but only 91% of “regular folks†gave it a thumbs up. Granted, both numbers are impressively high, but it’s unusual to see critics liking a summer Sci-Fi tentpole movie more than the average moviegoer.

In any case, the story for the second film is shrouded in secrecy and fans are eagerly awaiting any details on the story and production, which the word is will be starting this August.

Star Trek 2 is scheduled to open on June 29, 2012.

it would be awesome if we saw a conflict between Starfleet and the Klingons. Sooo instead of the Organian peace treaty like in TOS, we see the Enterprise and a couple other Connies like her battle Klingons in a brutal battle.. I also wanna see the progress the Kirk/Spock/McCoy relationship has made.. Are Kirk and Spock as close to each other in this universe as they were in the Prime(TOS) universe.. I am stoked for this movie as well...I haven't been more excited to see Star Trek on the big screen than I have been the last few years..

They would never find such an epic character for Khan as Ricardo Montalban was. Starting from the first film, they may would put Harrison Ford or Geoffrey Rush in the role of Khan. And I'm sure they would put the legendary cry into that movie. And I want to avoid that at any cost.

I do not want to see Khan, I want something new. I don't want them to spoil a classic villian like Khan and I am pretty ceratin I read somewhere they have no intentions of doing Khan at least anytime soon. I would actually like to see someone like the Female Romulan Commander, or Kang, Kor or Koloth in one of these upcoming movies. But have them in a new setting and the story different to what we have seen in TOS.

This is the point where they could take any of the many good TOS era books and adapt them to a film. I think that would be a great compromise as it would be something new without necessarily undoing anything that has already been done. Although, if they were to turn one of the episodes into a feature film, I would love to see Balance of Terror.

I think the episode, "The Enterprise Incident", would make an excellent film. JJ could explore all the subplots Gene wanted to do but didn't have the time or wasn't allowed to. Keeps the Rihannsu front and center as the primary foe, which I like. And I think someone should seriously consider stunt casting the Rihannsu Commander. She should be played by someone whom is kept a bit of a secret and then revealed about a week before release. And it should be someone whom has never been seen in any SciFi film or series before. I think she ought to be someone whom people see and say, "Whoa! Didn't see that one coming at all!" Why? Remember all the fun we had trying figure out who the second Jedi was after it was mentioned at the end of Empire Strikes Back?

I don't want to see a movie based from any of the current released ones. They need to do something new.

Ideally (having one Romulan ship destroy 47 Klingon 'Warbirds' would have left the Klingon Empire mad at the Star Empire. I'd like to see a movie that focuses on the backlash following XI. The Klingon and Romulan Empires at War, with Starfleet and the Federation trying to stop the conflict and aid those who end up being drawn in to the situation.

I know that isn't going to happen, but it would give us chance to see some more Klingon (and Romulan) ships from the JJverse, in addition to a few Federation builds, maybe even the Miranda Class if we're lucky.

Remember all the fun we had trying figure out who the second Jedi was after it was mentioned at the end of Empire Strikes Back?
There was a second Jedi?

ObiWan says 'Thab boy is our last hope" and Yoda says 'No..there is another..' right when Luke leaves Dagobah for Bespin. Which is kind of wrong because Obi-Wan knows that Anakin had twins..but of course Empire was made before EpIII soooo lol anyways back on topic

I don't wanna see anything thats been done before...and you can't do WOK because we aren't even that far into the timeline yet... remember Kirk takes command of the Enterprise around 2258-2259 in the JJ Timeline.. He didn't get command of the Enterprise until 2265 in the prime timeline.. Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain in the prime timeline whereas he was promoted to Admiral in the JJverse and of course no Talos IV in the JJverse like in the Cage. so he'll stay in that wheel chair for a while..unless he was just injured and couldn't walk yet. They don't say whether the wheelchair thing in TrekXI is permanent for Pike or not.

Actually, the idea of making Luke and Leia twins was already present during the making of ESB, that's why Youda talked about the "another". But Ben knew that Leia is not a warrior, Luke is a far better material than Leia for bekoming a Jedi Knight.

JJ Abrams: ‘Amazing Ideas’ For Star Trek Sequel – Will Focus After Super 8 May 6, 2011
by Anthony Pascale

Karracaz at DA said:
Star Trek sequel producer (and possible director) JJ Abrams is currently getting ready to release his new movie Super 8. And Abrams says that after that, he is ready to put his focus onto Star Trek. Details below.

Speaking to MTV, JJ Abrams confirmed that there still isn’t an officially approved script for the Star Trek sequel, but he said "we’re working on it." Noting how this time the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have additional help:

Damon is working on the script for this one. As busy as I’ve been with ‘Super 8,’ I remember that when we did the first one, Damon was that busy with ‘Lost.’ So it’s going to be very cool to have him on board as a writer…There are some amazing ideas. These are not just great friends of mine, but they’re great writers. I’m thrilled and very optimistic that it’s going to get to where it needs to get to

Abrams still hasn’t announced if he will direct the Star Trek sequel in addition to producing, noting:

The truth is that my focus has been so much on finishing ‘Super 8′ that it’s been something I’m looking forward to getting to, but with an incredibly compressed post [production] schedule, there hasn’t been a whole lot of time for me to be working with the writers…Now that ‘Super 8′ is drawing to a close in terms of this post schedule, I’m looking forward to jumping in and hopefully getting that ready as soon as possible.

Super 8 comes out on June 10th. So it looks like the Star Trek sequel still has another month before the ball really gets rolling. Hopefully that will leave the team enough time to get production started by September and release the film as planned on June 29, 2012.

Ahh yes, Leia. However, Leia wasn't an 'actual' Jedi at the time, was she? ;)

...yes she has potential, but she hadn't had the training, besides, I don't think that was really her focus. I expect there are other people 'alive' though who could become Jedi's. Just haven't been found (or trained) just yet.

Here is some updated news on the new movie:

Pre-production underway September 13, 2011
by TrekMovie.com Staff.

Back in July we reported on news that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams was "moving towards a commitment" to direct the sequel to the 2009 hit. Now comes news that Abrams has officially committed to the project.

Vulture confirms the news, reporting that pre-production on the sequel is currently underway. Even more important, the site reports that the script — written by Alex Kutzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof — is expected to be completed by the end of the month and Abrams will begin shooting the film this winter.

There’s still no update on when the sequel will be released. As we’ve previously reported, Paramount delayed it’s release earlier this year (it was originally set for June 29, 2012–now its TBD) and has already slated the G.I. Joe sequel in the former slot. There are rumors that the film could slide into 2013 (perhaps summer or winter).

Last month Abrams teased that an announcement was close:

"I’m excited. We’re working hard. We’re very close and I hope to have something to talk about concretely soon. I do feel like if ‘Trek’ happens as we hope that it will, it will be a fun return to that group of people, because it’s an amazing group."

Update: No additional details, but EW has confirmed that J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Trek sequel.

Some more news for the upcoming new movie.

Orci: Star Trek Sequel Scouting Underway + Comics To ‘Foreshadow’ Sequel September 30, 2011
by TrekMovie.com Staff

We are still awaiting official announcements regarding the Star Trek sequel, but in a new interview co-writer/producer Roberto Orci gave a brief update on w, Filed under: Comics, Orci/Kurtzman, Star Trek sequel (2012) , trackbackork being done currently. Orci and Star Trek comics writer also talked about how the new IDW series will tie into the sequel. Details below.

Orci: Scouting for sequel underway

In an interview focusing on the new Star Trek series of comics, Star Trek sequel co-writer/producer Bob Orci also gave a quick update on the film’s progress and confirmed reports that JJ Abrams will be directing:

Orci: The cast is excited. We have a director. We’ve started scouting locations. The second time around the crew is already together from the start, so we can jump right into the adventure.

New Comics series to tie into Star Trek sequel

Orci and Star Trek comics writer Mike Johnson also talked about how the new ongoing "Star Trek" comics will both retell TOS stories and tie into the upcoming sequel:

Johnson: As we get closer to the next movie, the stories will begin to foreshadow the events of the movie, such as possibly introducing new characters we will see onscreen… pun very much intended.

Each episode will be told in two issues, so in issue #3 and #4 we will revisit the events of “The Galileo Seven.†I’m excited about this one because it’s a Spock-centric story that explores his brief experience as a commanding officer and how he was affected by losing command of the Enterprise to Kirk in the last movie. I can’t spoil which episodes come after that, but I can say that events will deviate more and more from the TOS versions as the new timeline evolves.

Orci: Re-visiting original episodes in the new timeline is great for two reasons. First, we can do things we can’t do in the movies, simply because we don’t have the time to explore so many different adventures in the course of one film. And second, it’s so much fun to revisit the classic stories. Imagine being invited to jam with your favorite band. The classic songs will never change, but you get to play them in a new way.

Quinto “Prepping†For Star Trek Sequel – Hasn’t Seen Script October 11, 2011
by TrekMovie.com

Star Trek’s new Spock has a new movie opening next week (Margin Call) and while the actor is out promoting that film, he is also gearing up and preparing for to return to the USS Enterprise. In a new interview Zachary Quinto gives a little update on the Star Trek sequel.

Zachary Quinto is starting to publicity for his upcoming film Margin Call and was asked by the Orlando Sentinel about the next Star Trek movie. Quinto gave an update on Trek’s progress:

Quinto’s participation is required next in a “Star Trek†sequel, which starts filming early in 2012 and will take up the first half of the year. “I’m starting to shift into that mode of preparation,†he says “I have physical training and other ways of prepping for it. None of us have seen the script. We’re all very curious to see where he’s taking us this time. We’re going on rumors, little hints here and there, stories we’ve been told.â€

Quinto also talked about how being in Star Trek helped with his new production company:

"Starting my production company is something that ‘Star Trek’ allowed me to do. I could utilize that exposure and parlay it into opportunities that would allow me to tell my own kind of stories instead of stories other people see me in. It’s all tied into Star Trek. It put me in a position to have access that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I wanted to use that access to tell my own sorts of stories, with me involved in telling them."

The first film from Quinto’s new production company is Margin Call, which tells a story framed around the recent financial crisis. Quinto co-produced the film and is also part of the ensemble cast. Margin Call opens October 21.

Added News: It seems JJ has found who he wants to portray his new villian. JJ is reportedly in discussions with Benicio Del Toro to play the "secret" villian. It is so secret that it is reported that JJ has not even told Del Toro about him. I guess he wants to make sure he is on board first.

Thanks SciFiFan, looks to me that perhaps the new villain could be Gary Mitchell for the fact that he is wearing a black Starfleet Uniform like Kirk did in the last movie and he is strong enough to push Spock around with Spock struggling.

Bringing back Gary Mitchell, now that would be interesting...wonder how they would change that story to change it to a feature-length one...

BREAKING: 9-Minute Star Trek Into Darkness Preview To Debut in IMAX 3D with Hobbit Movie November 14, 2012
by Anthony Pascale

We have all been waiting for news on the first look at JJ Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness. And this afternoon Paramount announced that a 9-minute extended preview of the movie will premiere on IMAX 3D on December 14th. More details below. [UPDATED]

Extended Preview Of Star Trek Into Darkness Showing With Hobbit

Paramount has confirmed with TrekMovie that an extended preview of JJ Abrams 2013 feature Star Trek Into Darkness will be shown exclusively with IMAX 3D showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which premieres on December 14th. This preview is similar to how the first 7 minutes of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises was shown ahead of IMAX screenings of Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (which was produced by JJ Abrams, small world). Just like with that preview, you will have to go to the theaters to catch this first glimpse of the movie as TrekMovie has also confirmed the preview will not be shown online.

press release

WORLD PREMIERE EXTENDED PREVIEW OF J. J. ABRAMS' "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" TO DEBUT IN IMAX 3D ON DECEMBER 14th

THE FIRST 9-MINUTES FROM THE ANTICIPATED SEQUEL WILL BE RELEASED EXCLUSIVELY IN DIGITAL IMAX 3D THEATRES WORLDWIDE

HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 14, 2012) – Paramount Pictures will release the first 9-minutes from J.J. Abrams' eagerly-awaited "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film's official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.

"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS," the sequel to Abrams' 2009 hit film that redefined the Star Trek universe for a new generation, marks the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the third time a first-look will be released in IMAX.

"Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we're thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended 'first look' at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster."

To further the IMAX experience, "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" used IMAX cameras to capture several sequences. Exclusively in IMAX theaters, sequences filmed with the extremely high-resolution cameras will expand to fill more of the screen with unprecedented crispness and clarity, putting moviegoers right into the explosive action and vast scope of the film.

"STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" is written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci.

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/729578/star-trek-into-darkness-plot-officially-revealed/

The upcoming sequel to director, J.J. Abrams' intensified, sexified reboot, Star Trek Into Darkness finally has some light shed on its mysterious plot thanks to an official press release by Paramount.

This time, it's not about rebellion, finding your place in the world, and fighting planet-destroying time-travelers, among other things most people do when coming to adulthood. Nope, this time, for Chris Pine's Captain James Tiberius Kirk, the battle comes home and it's personal!

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Of course, like any good bit of movie news teeming with rabid fan speculation, the revelation is predictably ambiguous, leaving us all with even more questions.

The most prominent question regarding this film surrounds the exact identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villain role.

Described as "an unstoppable force of terror" from within Starfleet, a sizable majority of fans now believe that Cumberbatch is not, as previously rumored, playing the more famous Khan Noonien Singh, but rather, would be playing Gary Mitchell; an Enterprise senior officer and one of Kirk's oldest friends.

In 1966's "Where No Man Has Gone Before," the second pilot for the original series that introduces, among others, William Shatner's Captain Kirk himself, Mitchell (played by Gary Lockwood) came into contact with a strange space barrier which turned him into a silver-eyed, irrational megalomaniac with ESP and God-like powers. -- Not to spoil it, but things ended badly with a lot of death and explosions.

If Into Darkness is indeed an updated version of that episode, it would be a nice nod to longtime fans and would show that, despite the new franchise's more in-your-face aesthetics and new attitude, that it is still doing its part to contribute to the Star Trek legacy.

Of course, we're still speculating and for all we know, J.J. Abrams might be throwing us a curveball culminating in the revelation that they were in purgatory the whole time.

Star Trek Into Darkness chases "Might Be Gary Mitchell" across the galaxy to theaters on May 17, 2013.

I'm actually glad we seem to be shying away from the "Khan" idea. Wrath of Khan was one of the best Trek films made and whilst I haven't seem the episode, (I have read the original story though) it sounds like a good episode - so leave it be! The Original Series ran for around 70 episodes, there has to be good ideas in there that could make a good film besides Khan!

I actually hope they never redo a TOS episode with perhaps the exception of the Tholian one and the Balance of Terror. I'd like to see new things, not rehashed TOS episodes. Khan should in my opinion never be done, they can make an equally awesome villain without messing with past characters. If they want to bring past characters back, bring back the minor ones, who got very little screen time, give them a more prominent role like they did with Pike in the first movie.

Saw a review confirming that the actor playing bones leaked the plot being about Gary Mitchel. I'm pretty sure this is old news, but watching the video pretty much confirms it for me. At least, if its not Kahn, which seems very unlikely to me.
