Hello everybody!
I just wanted to know if someone else around here is as much of a Southland fan as I am.
Or is this show known at all?
It follows the Detectives of the LAPD Homicide and the Gangs&Guns units - as well as the day to day work of the uniformed officers on the street.
On his blog a former cop christened this show the "most realistic police drama" ever. And it is spot-on! I live half a world away from Los Angeles and still some of the police work shown was exactly like the police work I had witnessed while working on the same streets the Berlin Police Department does.
"Look sharp, act sharp, be sharp."
And this is where the first huge difference to other police procedurals comes in. It`s not just the plainclothes detectives, it is also the officer on the street, for better or worse.
Fresh out of the academy, Officer Ben Sherman (actor Ben McKenzie) is partnered with John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), his FTO, Field Training Officer, to spend a year as a "boot" or rookie in an LAPD Crown Vic to receive the hands-on training every new officer needs.
Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King) and her colleagues from Homicide have to deal with the daily carnage in one of the US`biggest metropolitan areas.
TVTropes says the show is a mix of Law&Order and Battlestar Galactica. They are right - somewhat. If you liked BSG and like police procedural, you will love this show. If you expect David Caruso handling his sunglasses, you will be disappointed.
A gripping show, from its first to its last fifth season, if you ask me.
Anyone else in for a ride in a police cruiser?
