Back in the day when the Stargate Project had its own forum, I gave them a fair bit of help but in the down time before the move here I worked on improving my high polygon modeling and I'd like to share that with you.

Some of the models are older ones I made in the past while others are more recent. In a way it shows how I have improved and learned over time.

This will be an ongoing thread since show everything I have done will be overkill for one post. So sit back and enjoy the show.

I look forward to your comments and feedback.

----------------------------------

To start things off I'm going to show a few Stargate related scenes I have done over this year (I'm a StarGate fanatic and proud of it.)

I'll follow this up with some pictures of my most recent high polygon StarGate ships. (If you visited the StarGate Projects sub forum you may have seen them.)

In this picture is my (from right to left) USAF Excalibur, USAF Ares, And my own high poly model of the USAF Daedalus (still a WIP)

And some better shots of the Daedalus.

Right now the Daedalus is on the back burner since I need a break from it and that brings me to my current project, the USAF Tempest.

Your welcome. I am glad you are sharing these with us.

I bet at least one or 2 of those images will become desktops of some members. Those images you made are on level with the SG1 and SGA shows. Great job.

Well I still think I have a long way to go before I'm that good but I guess an artist is always the hardest on themselves.

Ok a few more pictures for today.

Awhile ago I started to read the Culture novels by Iain M. Banks (at the time Consider Phlebas and Excession) and found myself inspired by the universe he created. With this inspiration I created a few models and scenes based in that universes but I took it a step up, since most ships tend to be very basic in design I took them and evolved them so they would be more fitting to a visual medium like pictures or animations and this was the end result.

A Culture R.O.U (Rapid Offensive Unit)

Indeed I am impressed, we don't get a lot of high poly stuff around here, mainly due to most of the modeling done here is for the Armada games.

All of those look really good. You have a real talent. Keep it up.
Thank you. :)

I originally started out as a high polygon modeler and then the SGP was interested in a few of my ships so I decided to lend them a hand in both a modeling and support capacity. Going from high to low poly modeling really was a change of pace and took a fair bit of relearning to make the most of a smaller polygon count but I think this helped my own high poly modeling by creating cleaner meshes.

Time for round 3

Ok these ships are from a collaboration project that I worked on at another forum but in the end fell apart as soon as spring hit. (got to hate the summer time blues lol )

The idea of the project was to create a short 3-5 minute long space battle animation. At the point the project ended we had most of the modeling done (which I did 60% of the ships :) ) and were going to start on setting up the animation.

Well here are the ships I made for the project.
Enjoy. :)

You do some very fine work. I really am considering making one of them my background. *readies needle incase the bubble needs to be burst*

Some lovely meshes there, what program do you use?

Lighting on the pic's are top-notch (I'd hate to see the render time on those things, talk about a coffee break)

Never could get the hang of modelling high-poly, any tips you could give?

Some great detail on those meshes though, beautiful panelling and detail.

Indeed outstand modelling and ship designs, did you make up the designs yourself?

Thank you and I'm glad you think they are background worthy material.

Thank you and the rendering times are not that bad with the exception of the one scene with the orbital. Most of the time it takes 20mins to maybe 2 hours at the most but the orbital scene had so many reflective surfaces and shadows that it took almost 12 hours.

As far as tips go, always have an idea of what you want before you start modeling your detail. This will save you a lot of time in the end and help keep everything with the same feel and flow to it.

Here is a breakdown of how I go about my modeling.

I start by selecting an area that I want to work on. I look over the area and try to think what the major and more complex details will be. Once I decide what I want I start working on the details for that area in a new and separately layer and then attach them to the main model when I'm finished. Once I have my main detail in I take the rest of the area that’s not detailed yet and put it in a new layer. Here is where I add the smaller and simple details like panels. All of the paneling is just stenciled on and then bevels out. I cut and add polygons as need to help make things more varied. Once done and the model is re-merged I move onto the next area. Nothing too special in what I do but as a tip when you make a piece of detail save it since recycling can save a lot of time over the whole of a model project.

Yeah they are all original designs with maybe a few influences for the hundreds of sci-fi shows I watched over the years.

Now naturally the Daedalus is the one from the show and my ROU is based on the description from the books with some artistic interpretation tossed in but the rest are all original designs.

I still can't get over their detail. They look almost like what I have in my head for ships out of my privately created sci-fi universe that I have been doing on and off for the past three years.

Extremely good job, I may do an Adam and make one of them my desktop wallpaper soon.

I see, I am sure plently of people out there have ideas for their own sci-fi stories. One day if I get the time I may do a little short story of it. :)

Well here is a quick scene I made today. I wanted to get away from having just a starry background so I gave a nebula like effect ago.

Hope you enjoy. (I'm starting to get the urging to do a battle scene in the near future.)

Well like you I have my own personal universe but I find I do so much other modeling I don't have time to do stuff from it. lol.

Thank you and I'm happy that it cleaned up so well since both the scene and models are now 2 years old.
