I grew up with the classics, including the TV series. It was as iconic to be as the classic Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rodgers, Time Tunnel, Quantum Leap etc.

Around the year 2000 we got a new on shot Planet of the Apes movie, that really didn't work out too well.

Then back a few years ago Rise of the Planet of the Apes hit our screens. I first save it on DVD and it was something new but looked at taking the franchise in a similar direction and made a lot more sense about the evolution of the Apes. This year we got Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, it's sequel set 10 years later and tells us that Humanity has been all but wiped out by the virus created from the formula used to evolve the Apes (which was unintentional in Rise).

I got Dawn on Bluray for Christmas and have watched it twice now. It's a great continuation and is really shaping where they plan to take the movie series. They have already announced that there will be an Apes 3 coming. I loved the classic music in the last few seconds of the movie, it really brought the feeling of the classic back to me.

What do you all think of the new series? Any classic fans here on MSFC?

It is well done and thought out a lot more than the classic. I just hope that they do not over do it and run it in to the ground like the original did.

Well the Director is a long time fan of the Planet of the Apes series, so here is hoping it's in good hands. He directed Dawn and is rumored to be directing it's sequel. Considering the quality of Dawn I am hoping Apes 3 will be a great movie.

I suspect it will be entitled something like Struggle of the Planet of the Apes or War of the Planet of the Apes. Obviously it will have to do with the fight for survival of both species and dominance of the planet. It will be interesting to see. We probably won;t see it until 2017 at the earliest.

I own both new Movies and first didn't like the virus scenario that much (which is used to much, the last decade, with Resident Evil and 28 Days later series of Movies and other) but its more plausible in our time than having apes as pets and than obliterate mankind with nuclear war. The last movie showed the conflict between Man and the evolved Apes and within the ape group that well, i must say i like it more than how it was done in the original movies. I wonder if they will get the timetravel back into it, as this made the more SCIFI part of the original Movie Series. The original Movies where more a mix of SCIFI, SCI-Fantasy and the endtime genres whereas the new Movies have not that much SCIFI in.

I was wondering if the time travel part would surface at some point. I suspect it will down the track after the Planet becomes ruled by Apes. Maybe Apes 5 or 6.

It will be curious if Ceasar will still be alive by the time they bring in the time travel element. I have a feeling it will be several generations after his death where his values have been lost to the Apes with them only remembering that he freed them from the Humans.

It would be nice to revisit the first movie in this new version/timeline and see how well they can make it without it being just a direct copy.
