Ah - adding vertices... God I LOVE doing that in MS3D...:yuck: Boolean extractions are fun too... (making great big holes in your model for depressed and lowered areas) You should have seen me trying to get the landing gear bays just right on some of my ww2 models... I basically deleted whole under wing sections and re built them from scratch (adding vertices and then faces...) Talk about pain staking...

I guess k_merse right, I mean, MS3D can do practically everything you need it to for what? 20 - 30 £? I cant really justify spending more than that on a hobby...

I did when I played with legos... :lol2: Oh boy, that was a while ago. I still have most of them too. I pretty much stopped cold after I spent nerely $100 on my last set. Took me almost a whole year to save up for.

Unfortunatly, I got into different, more expencive hobbies,(paintball, video games, ect.) but as a rule, I think you shouldn't spend that much. Milkshape is well worth the $35 I spent on it, and I don't even model much. The fact that it lets me adjust hardpoints alone makes it worth it,

For making models for Armada or BC, Milkshape is more than enough. The only minor problem is that it lack certain modeling methods, like cutting the mesh alongside of a line and by adding new vertexes (the most painful for me, but there are some others as well). Still, with some experience, you can manage to do anything you need in MS3D.

Quoted for truth

To be honest, I'm much more impressed with the work done in milkshape than what's done in Max and its ilk.

Plus, as others have pointed out, it's expensive to the point of insanity. Milkshape is much better value for money. Although Adm_Z has gave me a sudden craving for plastic building bricks :lol2:

Hmm, is Toys'R'Us still open?

Milkshape is a very "powerful" model editing tool if you know how to use it. I takes time to really dig into it and to develop techniques, since it does not have the many advanced features other programs have. You have to do a lot of stuff yourself instead of just pushing on a button.

When 3ds Max is a Mercedes Benz, Milkshape is a Lada Niva: basic, down to earth, inexpensive and with 4WD

However Max is a very good rendering program. I am steadily learning new stuff, I just would not want to trade it with MS3d for the modeling part.

In an attempt to steer the thread back on course

I had some free time yesterday, and was able to get the top of the cruiser textured (mostly - I may add some stuff around the head). This is a very slow process, and I still need to do the bottom, sides, front and back (oh, joy!) so this won't be a quick release.

On the up side, I think it looks very good

Texturing is a long process - and it cant be rushed - the extra time spent on texturing is time well spent.

That looks amazing - i love the hull detailing you've done. Good job!

Hello:
It is a nice ship indeed, and for the info you have gave us, it is also an almost-canon ship. I think it can make a cool addition to any Tau'ri fleet. And that ship reminds me of the fan-designed Tau'ri Tempest class.

Keep it up!

EDIT: Well, the page took me to where I last saw this topic and I didn't realize there was an entirely new page... I apologize.
I am referring to the page from page 2

Detail textures take a while, but in the end well worth it. My BSG textures take like a solid 24 hours to do, but well worth it and I can see your ship and textures will be well worth it in the end. They look great even in this early WIP stage.

Thanks all. Finally finished the cruiser earlier, but I've no pics of that.

Made this as well, another Starfleet Museum ship...

Very cool, what role does it fill?

Glad to hear you've finished the cruiser as well, looking forward to seeing her :)

EU cannon says the wasp class is a "replacement" for the Daedalus (on safety grounds), however to me the Wasp looks like it could be better used as a pre-TOS Scout perhaps, or Destroyer. I don't know why, but the Wasp just looks more...dainty? than the Daedalus Cruiser.
Your rendition of the Wasp is definitely my favourite Amateur, fine work you've done there :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Did anyone ever reconcile the starfleet museum ships and timelines with the enterprise ships and timelines?
If anyone looks too deeply into all this kind of stuff I'm sure it'd drive them insane lol

They aren't ment to be reconciled. The site creator hates Enterprise. This stuff is ment to be an alternat timeline leading to TOS

And one that makes much more sense IMHO.

Yeah I have to agree I think it looks like a scout, it gives off the impression of being too small for a cruiser (to me anyway )

It looks really great either way though, my personal fave of all the museum stuff you've done so far Amateur :)

Thanks all, the Wasp really grew on me while I was making her. The spherical hull is just so distinctive :).

Another museum piece here. Well, sort of...

You see, the stations on the Museum site fit in all well and good with the TOS era; but they seem a little too advanced for the sort of ships built during the Romulan war. As such, I decided to come up with my own based on three major sources - Real life, Chyu Chen's old 'Romulan War Mod' stations, and the Warp 5 complex.

The result was a little toolkit that I can use to make all sorts of things which - in my opinion - fit the era better. Things like this for example:

attachment.php

Note that this is just a placeholder to test the method/pieces. They all need to be textured first so I'll have to remake this. Keeping the style though :D

Looks good man, looking forward to some sweet pre-TOS stations!

I love the big panels on the bottom you have. Yeah sometimes the best way it to make a kitbash kit as it does save you time. I have been known to do this quite often, especially with TOS and TMP Federation ships, YY is guilty of this.

I look forward to seeing some Starfleet Museum stations soon. :)

When did I miss that Wasp? It looks really cool :)
The station as well. What is it's poly count? Is it super-high, or surprisingly low? :D

Yeah, for stations I find it perfect. I'm going to texture them all seperately as well, then I can just change bits about and keep the same texture scheme. I can make duplicates for texture alterations, of course.

Oh, so this is a kitbash kit? :p

:lol2:

Pre-optimization, it stands at about 3000. I'm hoping to knock that down to at least 2500 though, remove a few excess faces and what not.

Thanks all, going to see what I can do over the weekend. Busy day today, so I doubt I'll have much chance to get anything done.
