• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Hello all,

It has been a while and after several months to think it over I have to be realistic. After 6-8 months of no real work being done to them I am forced to conclude I will probably never complete them. I have lost my drive and motivation. Burnt myself out and Armada and Fleet Operations doesn't hold any real interest for me anymore.

However rather than let anything go to waste I will be releasing everything I have completed and slowly complete what I haven't over the course of time.

I will be starting with my Star Wars and Enterprise content that I have completed. When this will be released I am not sure, perhaps after the upgrade so I might do a Christmas/Holidays release collection like I did last year.

As far for work Syf has done, I will have to talk to him when I see him next, which hasn't been for ages. Also Jetfreak, if you see this and wish to help with the images and whatnot just PM me and I'll send stuff to you as soon as I have something to send.

I know it's not what many of you wanted to hear, I just not no motivation left in modding this game, been at it for 11 years now (starting with Armada 1), time to move on.

I understand where you are coming from. I feel a certain obligation to finish my projects since I kinda odvertised it all over the place, but I don't think I will start any new projects, just finish the ones that are close, maybe update some old ones. I am downgrading myself from modding guru to casual tinker.

Yeah Casual Tinker is more like I will be. I plan to release everything I started at some point, but I won't be starting anything new. They will all be single or pack releases, no mods or playable projects. I will leave all that fun to the downloaders.

People can just my models for other projects if they like. May as well go to some use I think.

Difficult to stay motivated when you have been at it for this long. That, combined with the fact the it is next to impossible to get Armada 1 to run on a newer computer these days it is even more understandable. Armada 1/2 were great games but there is not much of a following these days. I haven't had the desire to even open Milkshape in the longest time. Not even my love for the Romulan's has been able to tempt me. Life goes on and I certainly wish you the best in your endeavors.

Actually, the FO devs released a patch for A1 recently, and I"m pretty sure it allows you to play on win7 now.

For me, the problem is the fact that so few people play and mod anymore, so you get like no downloads and no input or feedback. Of course there is always the random troll to give you negative feedback, but its not very often you get a serious critique.

Thanks Pepperman. Yeah the same is rather dull for me these days. I have struggled for well over 2 years but I just couldn't motivate myself. I think it took till I hit STO to realise that Armada doesn't hold the same passion it once did.

Still I plan to release as much as possible this Christmas for the community so at least those who want to can play with what they have seen in pictures/screenshots.

I just wish I could keep a modding rig running. I'm trying to save up for a sata to usb adapter so I can see if my HD is ok. I full understand the hole motivation problem. The way I see it modding is the friend that will always be there when we want to come back. It doesn't mind if you take a break; even for years.

I think every one of us will eventually move on. It's sad (last November was A2's 10th birthday...), but it is inevitable. And the downfall of A2F has only contributed to the death of the modding scene. I myself am taking a modding break right now, just because so many other things are going on in my life right now, but my modding passion has a bit of time left.

But I think the most important thing is not that the modding scene is slowly dying, it's that it was what brought us here. And whatever happens, I'm glad to be here with you folks.

Hello:
Burning-out is always such a bad thing, we all have been there I guess.... at least, I have been there in occasions. But I can thank some people like Apoclaydon/Blade and Epytron_Omega that always kick me back into action :lol2: .

So, I can understand how you feel Majestic, maybe eventually you can find new sources of inspiration, if not for Armada stuff, then maybe still for 3d modellling that you can still share.

Good luck!

Thank you all, I think the retirement came at the right time too, just last week I lost my 2 TB harddrive, it just died out of the blue. With it was all my coding, reference images and an assortment of other data. Luckly I have all my 3D models and releases backed up on my portable harddrive.

That data might not be lost, Depends on why the HD failed.

This. I've had two HDD failures so far, and in both cases most of the data could be salvaged. I'd say, if you want it back, give it a try. It's not expensive (in most cases and if you go to someone who knows what he's doing).

Thanks guys, Kat did tell me after we discovered the HD went into early retirement that recovering the data might be possible. I am thinking of going to our local PC store to see if they can recover the data, but that will probably be in a month or two.

I kind of look at it as a mixed blessing, yes I lost data, but it also became a mandatory clean up for me, I had so much data that really I no longer needed but never got around to cleaning it up or deleting it. I try to look on the bright side when things like this happen.

I just see there is no real point in getting really upset, it's not like I can go back in time and stop the drive from failing. :lol2:

Its funny, I've gone through a lot of hot and cold phases over the years but I still really enjoy playing around with the game even after even after 10+ years of modding. I understand the feeling that its time to get out though. Good luck Majestic, I'll look forward to seeing your final releases. And you know you can always come back to Armada shes not going anywhere.

Thanks Rod. I plan to release everything I have which includes but not limited to:

  • Peacekeepers and any old Parallels stuff
  • Coalition War materials, including finishing up the stations I made so players can have a complete ENT era Earth faction
  • Yesteryears, all my models. I need to talk to Syf about his.
  • Star Wars content, all my Star Wars fighters and models.

I'm going to try and get as much done after the site upgrade in October/November for a Christmas release, what I don't get complete will probably come in a 2013 release or released as WIP for others to complete.

Thanks Chile, yes there is always that possibility however unlikely it may be. I'd be more inclined to just model and release rather than mod I think if I did ever come back to A2. I might just release my models as standard MS3D and 3DS format so people can use them how they like, rather than them being for just the one game.

I'd thought I would post here rather than making a new thread.

I have noticed of late since releasing some of my older work that I have finished up recently that while some download them few bother to even comment on the files. As someone who is putting time and effort into these releases I find it a little disheartening that someone would download a file and can't do a simple curiously of commenting and saying thanks or whatever.

I am doing all this to give you the community some more stuff to play with, I could've just ridden them off and incomplete and not even bothered, deleted them left them on my harddrive etc. Due to this however I have as of today come to start to think, why bother. Why bother completing anything else, it might just be better to left the work fade into the past and let it be forgotten. And to think I have been considering of late of lifting my restrictions on my own work.

This thread is also closed, as it's run it's course and I have said what I wanted to say. Thanks for reading all.
