Hello:
The Nova class can fill many roles, I know the original Nova can be used as a surveyor vessel, because of it's size and shape it can go whenever they need/wish to go: planets, asteroid belts, all sorts of nebulas with much ease than any of the big science ships (like the Nebula class).

That is one reason I like the Nova class a lot :) . As for it's agressive look, well, that kind of shapes it's bheen the trend of the Federation post-TNG (Sovereign and Intrepid are prime examples).

At loooong last I've just about finished mapping the secondary hull, so now I can go about replacing all the windows :cry2:

But as I had Maya open, I've been adding physical detail. So armour plating and structural reinforcements, the sensor arrays and windows. I think I've also found my favourite angle for the refit, see picture C.

Hello:
I remember pic C, it looks very cool.

And don't worry about the replacing of windows, because I know it will be a worthy result  .

I like your the last image of the Nova class. Nice angle!
Your adaptation of the Intrepid class looks interesting. I never liked the shape and position of the nacells of the original.

Not been well this weekend, but managed to get the refit ready for first power up tests. I think they put hi intensity bulbs in the quarters but low power ones in the rooms with the big windows. And just forgot on the secondary hull! Also going for a new style on the lower hull sensor dish, Tron style rings as the big glowing ball was a bit much.

Those poor engineers, having to work without lights.

What do you men, poor engineers. They probably pulled the bulbs so no one could see them slacking off ;)

EDIT - there, happy now? :p

How many engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?
None! It's the job of a Technician to actually change the bulbs! But you will need scores of engineers to design the bulb, the fittings, the electrical system. Then the management chains to oversee the engineers...

Definitely some good work there, but I'm still undecided on the look of the deflector's orange part. Too plain but looks okay overall.

I know, there are some areas of the ship that needs additional detailing. I'm struggling with ideas for the deflector though.

I've implemented a new warp grill effect and re-tinted the armour. More changes are underway, it just takes so much time to get it right!

New deflector dish! Lets see if this meets with young master Jetfreak's seal of approval :D
To be fair, its a real struggle finding something that works. I don't like the original Voyager deflector, the Sovereign style just doesn't fit with the hull shape, and I want it to fit in with the Vesta (and I hate that deflector!)

The observant will note that the new darker armour also didn't stick around very long. It just looked wrong.

I can definitely see a fusion of all those elements, Vesta style in particular!

My only crit would be the vertical lines across the "inner mouth". Maybe delete them and change it to orange altogether? That was one of the visual cues of the original design. Blue outline and orange dish.

But its pretty good overall, really coming together!

And I thought nacelle design was hard

So here are a number of options I threw together. The far right was my attempt to use Voyager type elements, I hate it though. The others, well, variations on a theme. Top left is the one in the previous picture.

I'm partial to bottom left I think.

my choice would also be the bottom left and in the center the :"inner mouth" from the top.
But it is your call.

Thanks guys. I came to the conclusion that it needs to be on the ship to appreciate it. So here we have 7 combinations, I'm leaning towards either number 2, 3 or 6.
Going to work on the bump maps for a bit I think...

Test render with bump maps. i think there's something off as I can't tell if the grid lines are going in or out. Also I've realised I'm missing the impulse glows.

(Edited to try again as the image didnt attach  )

I'm missing the impulse glows too, they were visible at first, weren't they?

The impulse glows are currently only on the outlet itself. So at a more rearward angle the glows would be seen. What I need to do is expand the glow to the vents surrounding the outlet so they can be seen from a greater range of angles.

Over on DA Chilitrek asked some questions about the shuttlebay. So here are a couple of images as a comparison with Aads Intrepid.
As can be seen, the aft hull dimensions in general are more or less the same, all I've done is filled in the empty space for the landing strip cutout that the basic Intrepid has and slightly raised the profile of the spine to fit in a decent sized set of doors. This means that whilst my refit has lost the Aeroshuttle, it's got a larger hanger bay.

And a quick and dirty render of the Voyager with her little cousin that I forgot to post yesterday.

I'm never happy with the primary registry spotlight. Anyone have suggestions about how to do it?

What kind of software do you use for the textures? I use paint shop pro. I created a number of lights. I usually find something that I can use, sometimes I have to change adjust the size.
Perhaps you can do the same with the lights of the Nova class.

I use photoshop. And I'll confess it didn't occur to me to build light templates to reuse. Nor did it occur to me to steal the one off the Rhode Island (which looks far better than Voyagers)

It just occurred to me that the Voyager era ships had little or no aztecing detail at all. ;) I think it helps emphasize the smoothness of the designs.
