The subject model of this WIP ship has been something of a pain in my *** since the first version I tried back in April of 2004. Oh it came out okay, but at only 1088 polys was even low for a game model. Okay so maybe my pc system wasn't so fantastic and I also retried to rebuild this model 6 times. Even with the amazing amount of reference material (both 3d models and actual images) the results have not be anywhere are near as good as I am looking for. Still times have changed and since my Atlantis model came out as well as I found I've decided to give the ISD another go. So this thread will give a full account of the models WIP to final posting and available download. Also before anyone asks. There "might" be a new project on the horizon and its something I've been toying with for some 9 years now.
Okay so to begin with a bit of credit information. Firstly, I've always been a huge fan of Ansel Hsiao' models. His love of detailing is amazing to say the least. I believe he has to date made at least 4 versions of his own Imperator ISD and the last (IIRC) was around 4 million polys. The version I'm using might be version 2 which is at least 1.5 million polys so I would call this the baby of the family The version is available from sci-fi 3d is anyone wants to take a look but I suggest grabbing the one piece 3ds (final file) as its the most stable for ALL importings and remember kiddies. DON'T TRY TO IMPORT IT TO MILKSHAPE directly as the program will have a fizzy fit!! Secondly I'm also using shots of the studio model for certain details that I want to get semi-close as well as a a stack of other image references in case theres something not shown anywhere else.
Now please be advised that even with all this I'm not going for 100% accuracy as MS3d will crash out in saving a 3ds file at around 65,535polys but I'm hoping for no more than 15-20k and that includes mesh detailing. Oh and this will be game capable (even in Armada 1/2). Textures "may" be a problem but thats for a later time.
Anyway. After stripping out over 90% of the detail from the model leaving the engines, minor large detail and hull geometry the rebuilt sections are shown below (bare in mind that some of the details on the engine mount aren't correctly placed and the hangar is missing the small details) in the first three images: POLY COUNT: 3262 CURRENT BUILD TIME: Little under 4 hours.
