DUNE 2020

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

This is my favorite book of all time. I had hopes for this but I'm not sure anymore. Hopefully they won't change it more than they have from the book already.

Yep the ""Liet Kynes issue"" let us hope that is the largest change that they have made

Yeah, that's one change I'm not fond of.

I read today that they are making changes to Lady Jessica also, apparently to characterize her as stronger. Honestly, Jessica was already one of the most formidable characters in the book, so I have no idea what they are doing to reflect this.

Sadly, I just think I will never get a truly faithful adaptation and I guess that's okay. For now I've gone from hoping it lives up to the book to just being a decent movie.

I hate how series and movies do this. There is just no need for it.

I'm fine with gender swapping so long as it doesn't affect the plot, but I'm unsure how this will work with Kynes secretly having a Fremen daughter. He could easily hide Chani from the Landsraad as a man, but hiding a pregnancy as a woman would be difficult. Unless fem!Kynes isn't going to be Chani's mother, which wasn't all that big a plot point to begin with, to be honest.

Also, I mean, the first book just doesn't have much in the way of female characters compared to male ones. There's Jessica, Alia, Chani, Mohiam, and Irulan, but Irulan and Mohiam are bit characters (the miniseries expanded their roles just so the viewers wouldn't forget about them) and Alia won't appear until Part 2. Changing Kynes is a way to make Part 1 less of a sausage fest without majorly impacting the plot.

Not really given that Liet Kynes is a second a generation Fremen and was the Imperial Planetologistlong which was past down from his/her father long before the appointment to Judge of the change.

Father - Pardot Kynes

Was an Imperial Planetologist who studied Arrakis. He remained there and married a native Fremen woman, with whom he had his only child, Liet Kynes. Kynes was the first to be sent to study Arrakis, perhaps by Elrood Corrino IX. For Kynes, the planet was an expression of its sun 's energy, ready to be reshaped

Liet Kynes
Inherited his father's mantle and served as both the planetary ecologist of Dune and leader of the Fremen. He continued his father's vision of gradually terraforming the planet from a harsh desert world into a temperate world with precipitation, greenery, and open water. Compared to his father who almost entirely focused on the ecologic reformation of Dune and at times appeared to be tactless (though he was kind nonetheless), he paid more attention to the Fremen and was overall significantly more Fremen and less single minded than Pardot.

Planetologist only sent reports back to the Imperial court via of runners and mostly stay out in the desert so a hiding a pregnancy would be fairly easy

Ooh, looking forward to this one. I didn't even know they were making a new one! I loved the 1984 movie - yeah, it deviated noticeably from the source material and was probably rather confusing for people who hadn't read the book before. But IMHO its visual style was really unique and cool, and the cinematography was great. I'm hoping this one also finds its own unique style rather than becoming another cookie-cutter dark and edgy SciFi movie.

My only knowledge of Dune comes from vague memories of a weird film I saw many many years ago.
But this looks like it could be interesting.

This is my favorite book of all time, I am cautiously optimistic but there is no way two movies can really capture the entire scope of the book; they could barely do it with a 6 hour miniseries. Worse off, if the first film doesn't do well, then they won't green light the second and all we'll have is an incomplete story.

I don't know how to feel about this one yet. Hoping for the best.

My thoughts exactly needs to be a trilogy and filmed back to back.

Oh this is gonna be soooo hype. Love the shield effect - much better than the Yellow Jell-O cubes from the Lynch film!

you could say
Old Effect = Ugly A2 Stock Green/Red Shields
New Effect = Elrond/Cabal's Blue Shields lolll

Yeah, couldn't agree more. I think that a trilogy of films in the vein of the extended editions of Lord of the Rings might make the adaptation at least, acceptable; there will still be way too much cut to make it faithful, but at least it would be as close as it could get.

One film should dedicate itself to each of the three acts of the original book: Dune, Muad'Dib and The Prophet. And even then honestly, I'd leave it at just that, the first book only; no others should be translated.

If you wanted to adapt the actual Dune universe into another format, then it needed to be a high budget TV show like Game of Thrones where you could expand each book into seasons of story arcs. Even still, the rest of the book series would be hell to make palatable in anything other than book format because they are way too slow paced and philosophical. Dune Messiah and Children of Dune barely were coherent in Sci-Fi Channel's miniseries follow up. God Emperor of Dune, Heretics and Chapterhouse would be damn near unbearable to see onscreen. And some work would be needed with Hunters and Sandworms so that they aligned 100% with Frank's original vision, translating all of this to screen would be ridiculously difficult.

At least the original has a sense of closure when it ends and it's about as a complete non-depressing ending as the series received until Sandworms.

I am very hopeful that this will be good and I'm sure I will enjoy it, I like all versions including the 84 Lynch and 2000 Sci-Fi mini for all their flaws. But still, cautious optimism, I don't want another heartbreak like I got with Disney Wars.
