In a BBC press release, there will be a Doctor Who Christmas Special for 2008 but season 35 will be delayed until 2010. However 2009 will not be completely Doctor Who free as three specials will be shown during that year written by Executive Producer and Head Writer Russell T Davies:

"Doctor Who to return for fifth series in 2010
David Tennant to return to the Tardis

After months of media speculation, BBC One can confirm that the Bafta-award winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series [35] in spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007. Series four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in spring 2008 with a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009, Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies. The full length fifth series [35] will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series [35] in 2010."

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series [35]."

Following the critically acclaimed season three [33] finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the Tardis for the complete 13-week run of series four [34] of Doctor Who, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special. Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series three [33], is also set to return mid series four [34]."

As reported at DoctorWhoNews.com, Julie Gardner has revealed transmission details for two of next year's specials.
Julie Gardner has revealed transmission details for two of next year's specials.

She says in an interview with the Daily Telegraph: "Aside from Series Five, which will have a full 13 episodes and transmit in 2010, we are making four one-hour specials. The first, which we've already filmed, will go out this Christmas. The next will go out the following Easter. The other specials have yet to be scheduled, although one will definitely be on at Christmas 2009."

The Daily Telegraph article states that Russell T Davies is writing two of the specials and co-writing the other two. It is not known at this time who the other co-writer is.

I have now been told that the latest issue of DWM has reported that there is now five instead of four specials between seasons 34 and 35.

The extra special will also be in 2009 along with the other three slated for that year.

As mentioned before two of the specials was written by Russell T Davies each with another writer. One is with Gareth Roberts and the other with Phil Ford.

Ford finally makes a contribution to the parent show after having written the Sarah Jane Adventures story Eye of the Gorgon & the Torchwood episode Something Borrowed as well as now being the head writer of SJA.

The first, third and fourth specials of 2009 is produced by former Production Manager Tracie Simpson.
The second is produced by Nikki Smith who is also producing duties for the Sarah Jane Adventures.

How many "Planet Of"s is that now?

Not sure if I'm looking forward to SERIES 5 in 2010, (or as it actually will be, 2014), or not. Matt Smith just strikes me as "too young". Oh, well, we'll just have to wait and see.

DoctorWhoNews.com has reported that Euros Lyn will direct the two part special to be shown during the Christmas –New Year period which would mark the end of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.

Lyn will bookend the Tennant era as he had also directed the Doctor Who Children In Need mini-episode in 2005 which took place shortly after the Ninth Doctor became the Tenth.

The other two upcoming specials are directed by James Strong and Graeme Harper respectively.

To Australian viewers:
TV Tonight has an interview with Head of ABC Programming Marena Manzoufas in which she talked about scheduling Doctor Who on the ABC:
ABC: Timing the Time Lord :TV Tonight
"Manzoufas says she hopes to have turnaround closer to their UK screening than has been possible in the past. But it is still tied to the flow of publicity material.

“This time around with the specials they’ll be going much closer to air to the British transmissions. And the series will go to air closer to the British transmission,†she says.

“For the special [Waters of Mars] this year we would be showing it within 4 weeks or so and I would hope the Christmas and New Year special we would show in a 4-6 week period.â€"
