Robert Saint John over at the Outpost Gallifrey Doctor Who Forum posted the following regarding the future of Babylon 5:
"Anyway, here's the news from J. Michael Straczynski (JMS):

"Every 6 months, I get together with WB to discuss what to do something with B5. The DVD sales have raised over 500 million in revenue. Now, I produced B5s 110 episodes at about 90 million dollars. Somehow, B5 is still 50 million in the red. Every time I mention that to WB they say We made a good deal, huh? Anyway, they asked if I wanted to do a feature film but I declined mainly because I can't yet picture structuring a B5 movie as long as [Andreas Katsulas] and [Richard Biggs] insist on staying dead. (haha! - Robert) Maybe in a year or two I'll be able to but right now I can't do something big and those two roles will NOT be recast.

So I thought about it, and I suggested a bunch of short films. Little mini-movies or an anthology show set in the Babylon 5 universe. I pick a character and develop an hour-long story around that character. Stories that I wanted to tell during the B5 series but never had the chance to develop. They said, Okay. I said I wanted complete creative control. Do not change my words that I write, and I want that in writing. They said, Okay. And I want to direct. They said, Okay."

This project was green lit less than two weeks ago. Its going to happen. Production starts in September in Vancouver, Canada. Post-production will occur from October to February with a release of the first three anthologies in the second quarter of 2007. It's called Babylon 5: The Lost Tales. It will be a direct DVD collection of 20 minutes stories set in the B5 universe that will feature the prominent characters.

These stories will expand on the characters that were previously established. The only character he mentioned would not be covered would be G'Kar since he believes no one should ever voice G'Kar except for Andreas Katsulas, who passed away earlier this year.

Warner Bros has greenlit the project and he says production starts this September, hoping for a DVD release in the second quarter of next year."

Got this from Phil Eyden at the Gallifrey forum:
"Latest updates for you from JMS. The B5:TLT release has been cut from three tales to two, but these two have been increased in length correspondingly. The third required much more extensive use of CGI and has been put back to a second release if the first sells very well. All the stops are being pulled out to make the CGI up-to-date as opposed to B5 style ten years ago."

Now this sounds very interesting. I'll make sure to keep an eye, or more, on this.

New 'Babylon 5' DVD movie confirmed
Tuesday, November 14 2006, 10:38 UTC - by James Welsh

Warner Bros. Television has confirmed that production on Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, a made-for-DVD movie written and directed by series creator J. Michael Straczynski, has commenced.

So far, DVD sales of Babylon 5 have topped $44m in the United States for Warner Home Video.

Actors from the series returning for the DVD project include Bruce Boxleitner (President John Sheridan), Tracy Scoggins (Captain Elizabeth Lochley) and Peter Woodward (Galen).
"We are very excited to be releasing this new made-for-video release filled with original content for Babylon 5, one of the most successful science fiction series of all time," said Jeff Brown, senior VP at Warner Home Video. "This popular TV show which has been off the air for a few years continues to have a strong loyal fan base that is hungry for more content. This is the first time were utilizing one of our popular TV franchises as a made-for-video title, and we have a strong commitment to the growth of this sector."

Former SG-1 star Teryl Rothery gets a role in The Lost Tales:
http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/11/teryl_rothery_cast_in_new_ibabyl.shtml

"Teryl Rothery cast in new Babylon 5

Sunday - November 26, 2006 | by Darren Sumner

Actress Teryl Rothery has been cast in Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, a new direct-to-DVD movie now in production in Vancouver, British Columbia. The film (actually a collection of two one-hour stories) will be released in 2007, picking up some time after the events of the hit 1990s sci-fi television show.

Rothery co-starred for seven years on Stargate SG-1 as the beloved Dr. Janet Fraiser. She will play an ISN news reporter in The Lost Tales, according to writer, director, and executive producer J. Michael Straczynski.

The Lost Tales is intended to be a multiple-DVD series, with this first 2-hour installment subtitled "Voices In the Dark." It stars B5 alums Bruce Boxleitner ("John Sheridan"), Tracy Scoggins ("Elizabeth Lochley"), and Peter Woodward ("Galen").

"What I can say about the [planned stories] is that we go to Mars, Minbar and of course B5," Straczynski wrote to fans online. "We introduce a new kind of Minbari cruiser, and there's a rather startling sequence on Earth. I've decided to shoot each segment a little differently from each other, so they each have their own visual style that complements that particular story."

The DVD is expected to be released this spring, at least in North America. Find out more at Babylon 5 ISN News."

Also JMS in his website said there will be a Garibaldi story which would mean that Jerry Doyle will be reprising his character.

I am really looking forward to the release of these DVDs more and more. Aspecially if it's going to have Garibaldi in it. I've always like the character Garibaldi.

Well, things seem to be rolling along nicely judging by the latest from JMS on Dec 12th.

I turned in the director's/producer's cut last Friday, the studio
viewed it yesterday, loved what they saw, and now we've locked the cut.
Friday I have a music spotting session with Chris Franke, and up
north, Atmosphere is churning out CGI as fast as they can. (We're not
going for the shakey-cam look that BSG has made something of its house
style in order to not poach, out of courtesy. Our production offices
at the Vancouver Film Studios were right next door to the BSG offices,
incidentally. And just two stages down they were shooting the Fanastic
Four sequel.)

Fairly soon, probably starting late January, the director's blogs will
start showing up on the net. I can't tell you how much I hate being in
front of the camera.

It all sounds very interesting. I think that a new series is in order, perhaps a Telepath War being looked at closely. I have always wanted to know what happened in that war.

Well the teep war looks promising, judging by JMS' coments at Comic Con this year:

Q: My question is, there is still a great big gaping hole in the Babylon 5 story. Will we ever see anything of the Telepath War?

JMS: As I’m laying out these DVDs I’m thinking “We can do this story with Sheridan, this story with so-and-so, this story…ooh, Lyta…the Telepath War. So I’m starting to play with that for down the road. Here’s the deal, if these first DVDs sell well, if the broadcast get good ratings, these will be an ongoing thing. We will keep putting out ‘The Lost Tales’ and broadening that out until we’ve got ten thousand of them, whatever it is. If you want to get to the Telepath Wars, get the first ones. Eventually we do plan to get to that, yeah. Or I plan to get to that anyway.

Interesting.

I would also like to see a series set in the Dilgar War and one set with Valen/Sinclair and the last Great War over 1000 years ago.

Just noticed the latest from JMS. Not much, but at least we have a date for the first release :excited:

Not much to say at the moment. The studios shut down two weeks ago,
everybody's on hiatus. The post production process continues apace,
with animatics having come down before the break for approval so they
can start the heavy rendering. I came up with an opening set-piece
which is now being storyboarded out, and we have someone now designing
a new title sequence as well. We'll just keep doing this until
February/March, when we do the final mix, with the release date slated
for the week of July 27th.

I can't wait for this. New Babylon 5, you can't get too much of B5. One if not the best Science Fiction shows ever created in my opinion. :)

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales is also being released in Germany, even on a close date to the US Release.

I don't care for the translation... I watch my B5 DVDs in English anyway.
