• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Mae govannen! I don't think we have a thread about this yet, and I know there are several Tolkien fans on the forums, so here we go.

As you all probably know, Amazon announced that they're making a Tolkien-based series back in 2017, which will probably be released in 2021. There have been a few interesting revelations in the last months, so I'll try to recap what we know thus far.

The show will be set in the Second Age, and based on the map they've revealed (see here: amazon.com/lotronprime), it's before the fall of Númenor. That opens up a lot of possibilities for storytelling, including the forging of the Great Rings of Power (complete with Hot Sauron). Although it is questionable how much of the actual Second Age lore they have the film rights to.

All things considered, I think we can expect a story that's mostly original. From what I remember (and I certainly don't claim to be an expert), Tolkien's work on the Second Age is rather sparse and consists mostly of dry historical accounts, which I personally love, but IMHO doesn't provide more than a rough framework for an adaptation.

As for the casting, they did announce that Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has been casted to play... an unspecified character. They are REALLY keeping this under wraps.

Finally, they posted this video a few days ago. Worth a look. https://twitter.com/i/status/1155142047420080129 Looks like Tom Shippey and John Howe are involved, which is a good sign.

Feel free to post comments, speculation and general Tolkien gossip below. What do you hope to see? I, for one, hope for Eregion and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, as well as Khazad-dûm at its height. :3

Greetings, elf-friends! Today is the 65th anniversary of the publication of the Lord of the Rings! :)

And already, we have some news! The German Tolkien Society has conducted an interview with Tom Shippey, well-known Tolkien scholar and apparently part of the creative team.
There's an English version available here: https://www.tolkiengesellschaft.de/...view-with-tom-shippey-concerning-lotronprime/
Definitely worth reading.

Interesting points:
  • The Amazon team has a relatively free hand in fleshing out the Second Age (see my speculation above). But the Tolkien estate reserves the right to veto any unfitting additions.
  • Tom Shippey states that Brian Miller was supposed to be the overall director, but isn't sure if that is still the case (given that he does not appear in the creative team video)
  • The first season is planned to have 20 episodes.

I'm impressed by the talent they've gather behind-the-camera for this. But I'm still very glad that the Tolkien estate has veto rights on things.

The show was okay...worth watching if a fan but like the LOTR/Hobbit movies, don't expect a page by page correlation of Tolkien's works.
