• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. I was browsing some Trek related sites the other day and I stumbled upon some period photos of the original TOS Enterprise model. It's really great how they did the shots back in the old days, hard to believe they were already using blue screens back in the day.

Here are the pics of the good ol' grey lady and some other models too.

Indeed, it's amazing how far we have come since the 60's. It's been 40 years and look at what they do nowadays, even fans on their home PC's. :)

This is plain awesome. Thanks for posting.

You can do a lot of filming tricks even without all the CGI-stuff if you are just clever enough. For 1966 they did a great job with those models.
I haven't thought, that the models for the ships were that big, though.

She is parked just outside Air and Space Museum's gift shop :)

This 3.4 meter (11-foot) model of the fictional Starship Enterprise is on display in the National Air and Space Museum was used to film the weekly hour-long Star Trek television show.

Man, that's the ship my obsession with Science Fiction started with. I have been tought more about moral and social things in TOS than in school.

I guess I'd better go to the Air and Space Museum soon :D

My all time favorite star ship design. It just looks... right....

As the Maserati 250F was the definitive GP car design of the 1920's the Spitfire was arguably the definitive fighter design of the 1940's and the Riva Aquarama was the definitive pleasure boat of the 1960's - the Constitution Class is the definitive Starship of the... 1960's... wait, what?

It is a beautiful design, and a mark of a beautiful design is the number of "kit bashes" that are produced from it... (the Saladin, the Hermes, the Ptolmey...)

Thanks for these awesome pics!!

Aren't we all already members of that group?

I'm just impressed by the size of the models. That original 1701 is as big as my whole workbench here at home. Incredible.

I think Doug Drexler had a posting on his blog about how the actual original seen in those photos was eventually recovered after years of decay, or something along those lines. It was in a posting on the subject of just what colour the 1701 is, anyway-- which I found fascinating mostly because I've built at least fifteen models of the original Connie in various forms and kitbashes, and so having the precise colour information would be invaluable. Suffice to say I can't get enough of it from paint mixing without making up a bucket of the stuff (not that I haven't been tempted to do so!) but there were some specific points in that posting about the fate of the original filming model. And yeah, they were ALL that big.

:D

Yeah, I think I remember reading that one. Visiting Drexler's and Eaves' blogs every now and then really pays off. And I love how the original Romulan BoP was in these pictures, it's still one of my favourite TOS models.

AWSUM, where to we sign up? :p

I suggest renaming it though to its originally conceptualized name of "Connie Lovers", other Connies need love too! (Defiant, Lexington, etc.)
