Ok guys, I started with a new design idea, closer to the original trek design than my monygham and planck, but still different.

i tried to make it look like every part is merged. So the whole thing forms one big smooth shape. and kitbashs are impossible ;)

I did also add lots of detailes to the mesh which I did never model before, just to find out if its worth to do so.

anyway here are the pictures, textures will follow, but I dont know when^^

Nice models (both the ship and the yacht). :) But remember next time to put any pics larger than 800x600 pixels in spoilers or attachments. ;)

Now this I love. Are you planning on making it Armada ready?

One thing I will say - make more designs based on the same philosophy! Especially the nacelles! (My favourite part...)

But yes, looks very good. What's her polycount?

Thanks, and im glad that you like my engines :)
She stands at ~16k polys, so an armada release isnt planned yet.

That is an interesting design. The only thing is the nacelles look "thin". I might say have a go at giving them a bit more bulk. But heck, it's your model and design. It's still a rather nice and refreshing approach to the otherwise common designs. Besides my single crit, I do like the ship.

Awesome design, and looks like how I would imagine late 25th early 26th Starfleet design would go.

Thank you, i hope well see some ships of these time periods in the near future in new trek movies / series ;)

Actually i had the same idea but decided to revise it, because the engines follow the side line of the ship and i thought it looks better integrated this way. You know I like ideas and suggestions but in most cases I dont follow design ideas, sorry for that :D

Hmm, 16,000 is a bit much for A2. But then again, it's perfect for Legacy and she has such smooth lines...;) Ah well, if you wanted too I'm sure you could get it down (LOD's might be an nice idea - close range could have modelled details and long range could have textures. Just a thought.:))

What program are you using? Just as a matter of interest. Looks to me like those nacelles and saucer must have been a pain without a boolean tool, or at least some pretty advanced polygon modelling functions.

Good luck with texturing when you get 'round to it. I loath that part with a vengeance...

The site automatically makes each word in the title a capital letter due to many people with terrible grammar skills that never use capitals.

Yeah lods are great, i think ill try an A2 version but at the moment the big thing "texture" is the next step (i loath that too...). After that and a legacy release i can think about going on further.

And I do use Milkshape, no idea what a "boolean tool" is, but i am interested in a description. I did the engines with "poly by poly" and "extrude" techniques.

Wow, Milkshape? I am envious of your talent, Sir...

I couldn't even make a saucer in that program...

Anyways, a boolean is an extremely useful tool. What it basically does is work out how one object interacts with another; and then modifies that. For example - to make these engines I would probably extrude the basic shape from the main hull (probably using polygon modelling though - as Max tends to interfere with booleans on an extruded face) then make a box in the shape of the cut that I wanted.

Then it'd be a simple matter of moving it to where I wanted it - making sure it was what depth I wanted (shallow cuts or complete holes can be done - they just depend on where you place the 'cutting' object).

That's not the limit of the tool - it can remove anything but the part's that intersect and other such things. I never use 'em though - I'm happy with just making holes

One thing I have noticed though, is that there are a lot of 'artifacts' left over - so a quick bit of welding and vertex shuffling is in order afterwards.

But still, how one Earth did you get that good with Milkshape

Wow the boolean thingy is exactly what i need. I know i should get into 3dsmax, but its so complicate with all its functions...

ahem "artifacts"? what the hell are you talking about^^ dont come with **** smoothing errors, i cant hear that anymore....
lol i tried my best, but you should please mark those parts which need additional work in your opinion, so i can have a closer look.

I dont think that ms3d is as limitated as you think, modelling just needs some time...

Done, but I think Borg_Queen may have bet me to it.
Thanks ;)

Ahh, crossed purposes :) -

I meant if a boolean tool was used then there would be loads of vertexes loose. Your modelling is flawless (and I mean that - I can't see any errors. Smoothing or otherwise )

Meh, I guess I just find ms3d limited 'cause of the 'simplicity' of it compared to max. Not saying its any worse - just that I think I'm so used to having a thousand buttons to do practically the same thing :lol2:

Hope that cleared things up :)

the simplicity is the thing why i like ms3d that much ;)
And im pretty sure that ms3d is worse than max, i dont think that anyone can disagree with that :D
But its possible to do good things with ms3d too.

Anyhow yacht is leaving:

If you want to make one for Armada, it looks as though you could use the Intrepid as a base and modify it. Just a suggestion.

an Update! after a long time...

I decided to do real 3d rooms, but only for the top saucer.
I needed some time to discover how to do this, but it works, even in Legacy.
The interior textures are done, but the ship textures, need some more time...

well here she is:

Just started fooling around with Legacy a bit. Just finshed reading this whole thread. Wow! Typical FahreS excellence and beauty. You make the most amazing ships, regardless of what game they're for. Outstanding work, Sirrah!

I think a grid like Voyager would be very fitting, I see this design as a replacement for the Intrepid class. :)

Yes, some grid and panels should be nice.
