Originally built for the Galactic Republic and served as one of it's main classes of warships during the Clone Wars, like much of the Republic military it was inherited by the Empire after the establishment of the New Order and served as the Empire's first capital ship.
Primarily a carrier, the Venator could hold close to 200 fighters and was the largest cruiser that was capable of landing on a planets surface. While the height of Republic military technology and flagship of the Grand Army of the Republic, during the Galactic Civil War they were considered obsolete with most having been scrapped or stripped of it's armaments and sold to shipping companies as large cargo haulers. The few that remained in Imperial service were usually assigned to backwater systems or made up the personal fleets of high ranking Imperial Moffs.
Many were also left adrift at the conclusion of the Clone Wars with many having been salvaged and sold to many different parties and so were still a common sight especially among the navies of pirates like the Zhan Consortium and the Hutt Cartels.
