I have downloaded blender and have begun to learn it. I have not started my own meshes yet but, I do plan to do so soon. First I used a model by Ricky "Madman" Wallace and an image from Digital Blasphemy. Here is a look.

I have RJB's Ancient Ground Base and I am in the process of creating an image with it as well.

I hope to have my own meshes going real soon.

Blender, huh?

I have had aspirations to begin fiddling with blender for quite some time now - I just cant get it to run on my new PC...

I think if I could get it working right, and learn some of its basic functions, it would really add an extra zing to my models... (It can import / export .ms3d and .ms3d ASCII models...)

I really like what you've got going here - good work!

'Tis a good picture, the background looks very nice indeed :)

The thing that always put me off of Blender was the GUI, I just couldn't work of it. I tried it once to see if it was any better than Max, I just couldn't do anything with it...

Still, as I've said it is a nice shot; the only thing I'd say is maybe a more dynamic angle on the Klingon ship.

Learning Blender 2.79. Found a great tutorial on YouTube. The guy (Blender Guru) explains things very well and his tutorials are very easy to follow along. Started playing around on my own to experiment on some things. Below is where I am at right now.

Blender thus far has been my best friend for 3d designwork. It was a pain in the beginning considering I was more CAD orientated, but I found out that working with quads instead of tris was more beneficial.
I just wish Sculptris was the same way...

Whats the render engine like with Blender? I may have to switch to rendering my models outside of Maya as the thought of going back to my 512MB RAM XP machine to do renders is breaking my heart.

Blender 2.79 has two render engines you can use. The Blender render and the Cycles render. The image I posted above was done in Cycles. If you have a graphics card, you can actually use the GPU to render the image as oppose to the CPU. This will actually render the image faster.

BlenderRender.png This is using blender rendering engine.

Cycles.png This is with the Cycles render engine. All settings are actually the same for both images.

The Blender render engine has a very stark contrast. Bright is white while dark is black. The Cycles render gives the dark areas some residual light reflection as you get in the real world.

That is some nice progress man, is she a straight up TOS Connie or are subtle changes in store for her?

I am staying true to her classic overall design with the addition of some of Matt Jefferies designs from the Star Trek technical manual and some of my own additions. The impulse design is my own. I went with a more oval exhaust as oppose to the original square.

I just started learning how to use blender and I'm planning on making a viper. This is what I have so far. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It is slow going as I learn by trial and error. Not to mention, I don't have a lot of time in the day to spend on Blender.

@starbuck I wish I could give you advise but, I am learning as well. Best I can give at this point is save then try and see.

I've been working on my viper model for this week and this is the progress I've made. I don't know how much longer it will take, or how to color and texture it when I'm done modeling, but I hope I can find some tutorials or just experiment in blender.

I'm getting closer to finishing the viper, I also added space in the background. I'm not sure if I should try to add an image texture or to create the texture myself and paint it on.

Here is the final product, I'm probably not going to work on it anymore. Anyone can use it if they want, its also on cgtrader.com for free. It's not the best, but It was my first model and I'm pretty happy with it. This is the .obj format.

Took a step back and decided to work on my Constitution. I have decided that I will take some artistic liberties and meld features of each iteration that I like into one model. I don't have a lot of free time so this will take a while.

Working on the saucer now.
