I honestly think it should all be the same year here. we can get our driving permit at 15, we can smoke and vote at 18, and at 21 we can do everything else. I think that it should all be 18 or 21 and driving should be a 4 year class in highschool. Why should we trust people with others lives before we trust them to screw up their own?

But now we are really off topic.

I totally agree, one can get a Learner licence here at 16 and 9 months I think it is. The same age one can legally get a tax paying job. We get no lessons in high school, you're either taught by someone you know who has held a licence and is now on there full licence (Arter going through 3 years min as a provisional driver) or by a qualified driving instructor that you pay. Sometimes both as I did.

Getting one's licence is too easy and too many people think it's their right, not a privilege. I have both a full car and motorbike licence and yet I find it too easy and the punishments are pathetic. You run from a cop after caught speeding, you get like a $1000 find and a disqualified licence for like 12 months. Big woop. And people can choose to go to jail instead of paying. SO spend like a few days in jail and your fine is gone. So many people do it these days. It's like a small holiday to catch up on some sleep and get a few days off work, if they work.

It really angers me sometimes, I say they run from a cop, trying to evade them in side streets and putting other peoples lives on the line. Take their licence away for life. Impound their car, sell it off and put the money into either the Police Force or into the low income earners pays. I personally think punishments need to be a lot harder, that's why terrorists target us, they think we are weak by looking at our laws and punishments. And sometimes they are right.

I"m not sure what the laws are here, but I would hope they take away someones licence forever for doing that. If not then I think they should.

A Reckless Driving charge is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor under Virginia law.

You are facing the possibility of up to one year in jail, a 6 month license suspension, and fines that could cost you up to $2500.

and it appears resisting arrest has the same penalty, but I"m not sure what the penalty is when the two are combined in the case of a high speed chase.

Here, if you in a high speed chase you'l most likely get the following charges:

Resistiing Arest,
Reckless Endangerment
Reckless Driving
Multiple Different Traffic Violations

If you (intentionly) Ram into a Police Car (and, or, civilian car)

Agravated Assualt (also added if you get out and try to tango with said law dude)
Aussalt With a deadly weapon ( also added if you have a bat in you hand when you complete above action)
Aussalt on a police officer ( also added if you actualy land a hit when completeing above actions)
Atempted Manslaughter (very unlikly, unless you seroiusly injure sombody)

for hitting Stationary objects:

Destruction Of Property

For having a weapon in the car:

Possesion of a Deadly weapon with intent to harm (also a circumstantal charge)

From the side of practicality, wouldn't it make more sense to have the drinking age be lower than the driving age? That way you figure out what your limit is without having a car to crash.

I know that, but try telling that to roughly 25% of the student body of U of O, which is conveniently located about five blocks from my house. And that's not even counting the people around here that shouldn't be allowed to drive sober. My sister and I nearly got hit by two cars coming from two different directions simultaneously because neither one of the drivers could be bothered to use their blinkers or check for pedestrians at the cross walk.

Actually in NSW the age for a Learner's permit is now just 16yrs old (was recently changed, I just checked haha) and you can hold this for 5years before you can either renew it or go onto Provisional Red which is held for one year which you have to pass the driving test for, then you go onto the Green provisional for 2years which is done by passing a computer hazard perception test, then once you have done that you go onto a full licence by passing another computer test which is a mixture of the questions from the Learner test and the green Provisional test. Though if you are over 30years of age now when going for your licence you can skip being on Red Provisional by doing both the red and green tests at the same time and go straight to Green Provisional from the Learner licence.
The age for getting a tax paying job is now 14 years.
And we watched some of those stupid people on tv the other week who were doing high speed pursuits and they got off with a $1200 fine and 3 months suspension of their licence.. This was in Victoria but the punishment is lenient all over the country, its too easy to get away with stuff!
